Would you be interested in applying for our Wilvet Internship?

Learn from dedicated emergency vets, manage real cases, build critical skills, and grow in a supportive, team-driven hospital. The WilVet Internship gives new graduates the foundation, mentorship, and confidence they need to shine in ER practice.

Testimonials

“Jumping straight into ER medicine after graduating is incredibly intimidating. The internship created an environment where we were supported through this transition with guided and intentional mentorship that focuses on developing a strong medical foundation, and learning the skills needed to be a successful ER doctor. The amount of experience we got within the first year is astounding! It truly made me into the doctor I am today and set me up for success both in the short term and for the rest of my career.”

What can an intern expect from the experience and what is the day to day like?

As an intern you work with mentor doctors on every shift. This means that you’re never on your own, but you are treating your own patients as the primary doctor. The mentor doctor is there to coach, guide, and assist as needed, but you as the intern are talking to the owners, doing the procedures or surgeries, interpreting your diagnostics and coming up with your own treatment plans. As you progress through the internship, the mentor doctors will take a more backseat approach. They are still always there to help you as needed, but they transition to more of a resource on an as need basis.

We are seeking a Student Ambassador and an Intern!

Internship 2026-2027

Job Summary and Application

Interested in small animal veterinary emergency? Come work your internship year with Wilvet Salem, located in Salem, Oregon. We are looking to fill 2 paid internship positions for passionate new graduates (traditional year OR those finishing in the winter).

Not sure what to do after graduation? Come try us out for a 2-week externship in your clinical year or over summer or winter break.

About Us

We have a busy and diverse caseload of both critical and outpatient cases, as well as 24/7 hospitalization. We primarily see small animals but will also see small mammals such as ferrets and rabbits and we are developing rotations through the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Wildlife Safari for those interested.

Our mission is to work in a team-based environment that fosters respect, collaboration, and compassion in order to provide the best care possible to every patient, every time. We meet as a doctor team monthly to discuss cases and our goals for our hospital, and we further enhance our interns’ first-year learning with weekly teaching rounds.

We have comprehensive in-house diagnostic capabilities including radiographs, CT, ultrasound, and bloodwork, as well as a surgical OR, endoscopy, and isolation facilities.

Additionally, there are opportunities to attend rounds and see cases with Doctors Wepprich or Lewer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium if the candidate has interest.

Internship

Our 1st year internship program provides new graduates interested in emergency medicine the opportunity to work under the mentorship of our experienced emergency doctors and staff. Our interns learn how to be competent and confident emergency clinicians via hands-on experience with medicine and surgical cases, direct case management, and close supervision and support. We emphasize development of skills in patient assessment, building diagnostic and treatment plans, as well as effective communication with clients, patients, staff and colleagues.

We value a work-life balance and believe in providing a living wage for all staff members. We provide profit sharing for ALL full time employees. We foster an environment that values the team over individuals, and patient and client care are our number one priorities. It is important to us for the longevity of the clinician that we encourage no more than 12 shifts per month on average.

Application

Please send the following materials to anna.wepprich@wilvetsalem.com:
1) Current resume or curriculum vitae
2) Cover Letter discussing your career goals and any experiences you have had working in small animal medicine or emergency medicine.
3) Please note: We strongly encourage interested applicants to try us out for a clinical rotation during their 4th year (See below). We can also accommodate other arrangements for in-person extern experiences that fit your schedule, just email us.

Externships

We love hosting veterinary students in their clinical year for two-week rotations (40 hours per week). Students attend doctor rounds, discuss cases in-depth, join doctors for exams and client communications, and scrub into surgeries. This is by far the best way to see if the Internship program is right for you. Externships are unpaid. Scheduling is flexible, just email us! We also host students during their summer or winter breaks during any year of vet school. These experiences tend to be shorter (one week or a cluster of dates) and they are a good time just to see what the environment is like in an emergency clinic.
